EV batteries, batteries for light means of transport (such as e-bikes and e-scooters) and industrial batteries above 2 kWh need a passport for each individual battery under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. In Veribl you fill in the data that is the same for the whole model once, then add each battery by serial number and keep its own status up to date. This article is for battery makers and the teams that run their data systems.
The battery passport is mandatory from 18 Feb 2027.
Turn on the battery passport for a product
- Go to Passports and open the product.
- On the Checklist tab, under Which rules apply?, tick Batteries – Battery passport.
The Battery passport and Batteries tabs now appear.
Fill in the model data
Open the Battery passport tab. The fields are grouped, for example general and manufacturer information, compliance and labels, materials and composition, carbon footprint, due diligence, circularity, and performance and durability. Each field shows its legal reference. Click Save battery passport when you are done.
Some fields are marked applies later: they have their own start dates in the regulation (carbon footprint, recycled content and supply chain due diligence), so they are not required from the start.
Who can see each field
Every field belongs to one of three access groups:
| Group | Who sees it |
|---|---|
| Public | Anyone who scans the QR code. |
| Legitimate interest | People you give access, such as repairers and recyclers. Detailed composition, spare parts, dismantling information and safety measures are in this group, along with each battery's own data. |
| Authorities | Authorities only. Test reports are in this group. Authorities also see every Legitimate interest and Public field. |
You give people access under Passports › Access. See Passport access.
Add individual batteries
Each battery has its own passport. Its QR code carries the model's GTIN and the battery's serial number.
- Open the Batteries tab.
- Click Add batteries.
- Paste serial numbers, one per line or separated by commas. You can add up to 5,000 at a time.
- Click Add.
Serial numbers that already belong to another product are skipped, and Veribl tells you how many. Use QR links (CSV) to download the links for printing once the passport is published.
Keep each battery up to date
Select a battery to see and update:
- Status — original, repurposed, re-used, remanufactured or waste
- State of health — a percentage from 0 to 100
- Cycles — the number of charge cycles
- Events — a log of anything notable, such as an accident, deep discharge or repair. Type the event name and click Log.
Every change is recorded in the battery's history with its date and source. Once the product's passport is published, a battery's history is signed so it cannot be changed unnoticed.
Report state of health from your systems
A battery management system can send updates through the API instead of someone typing them in.
- Go to Settings › API keys and click New API key. Give it Read and write for Passports.
- Send a request to
/api/v1/dpp/units/{serial}with the key as a Bearer token:
curl -X POST https://app.veribl.com/api/v1/dpp/units/{serial} \
-H "Authorization: Bearer vdpp_…" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{ "stateOfHealth": 96.5, "cycles": 412 }'The body accepts stateOfHealth, cycles, status and event (for example { "kind": "accident", "data": { … } }). A GET on the same address returns the battery's current data and works with a Read only key. See REST API for authentication and limits.
Note: A battery with a public passport cannot be deleted.
